Hapkido 합기도
This postwar Korean art shares both its hanja (合氣道) and a common root with aikido. Like aikido, hapkido has a very sophisticated system of joint locks, grapples and throws, and utilizes circular movement and the blending and redirecting of an opponent's attacks. In addition, however, hapkido also has a plethora of strikes, the quantity of which rivals that of dedicated striking arts, such as Shotokan or taekwondo. Thus, hapkido is both a soft and a hard art. An excellent art for self defense, hapkido offers multiple ranges of combat, grappling, striking, as well as defense against weapons. In addition, our hapkido program includes training with the sword.
Our Program
Our program utilizes the curriculum of the Korean Hapkido Federation of Maryland. It is geared toward teens and adults, as some of the techniques are not good for young children whose bodies are not yet ready to be stressed by the various locks and grapples that are at the core of hapkido. Hoshinsul 호신술, or self defense (lit. protect body skill), is the main emphasis of our program.
