Kumdo 검도
Kumdo, the way of the sword, is a part of our hapkido program. We teach the use of the sword as a weapon with Korean hyung and practical sword technique. We also teach unarmed defenses against the sword. The sword used is the yedo, a single edged two handed saber that is analogous to the Japanese katana. Training is done with a mokdo (popularly known as a bokken) and a jukdo (popularly known as a shinai).
Kendo is held at Studio of Ballet Arts
Kumdo is also the Korean pronunciation of kendo, a style of Japanese fencing that was brought to Korea in 1896. While Mister Sullivan practices kendo as well, it is not taught at the Willow Grove School at present due to ceiling height. For those interested in kendo, Mister Sullivan teaches kendo at Studio of Ballet Arts in Sandy Spring. Kendo is taught in association with the Maryland Academy of Arms at the same location.
Studio of Ballet Arts is located at 17810 Meeting House Road, Moore Building Suite 350 in Sandy Spring, Maryland. We are currently running the intermediate session. We still have open seats available!
Please visit us at Maryland Academy of Arms for information about kendo.
